Richard S. Lazarus (born March 3, 1922, in New York) was a psychologist who began rising to prominence in the 1960s, when behaviorists like B. F. Skinner held sway over psychology and explanations for human behavior were often pared down to rudimentary motives like reward and punishment.

Lazarus and his colleagues have also argued (e.g., Folkman & Lazarus, 1980) that secondary appraisal coping processes can be categorised into two main varieties, emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping. Lazarus and Folkman (1984) designated two general types of coping strategies, problem-focused coping, and emotion-focused coping. Problem-focused coping is cognitive and behavioral efforts to alter a stressful situation, and emotional-focused coping is cognitive Lazarus and Folkman co-authored a book called "Stress, Appraisal and Coping" in 1984, which worked through the theory of psychological stress, using concepts of Cognitive appraisal and coping. [5] [6] In this book, they were the first to make the distinction between "problem-focused coping" and "emotion-focused coping" which could result in consequences for both physical and mental health. [7] Lazarus and Folkman defined two major coping categories: (1) emotion-focused coping, which refers to the regulation of emotions that are generated by the appraisal process, such as anger or sadness in response to the appraisal of loss, anxiety, or fear in the case of the appraisal of threat, and eagerness and excitement, mixed with some worry, in the case of the appraisal of challenge; and (2) problem-focused coping, which refers to the management of the problem itself. Lazarus and Folkman went on to make an important and now widely accepted distinction between two types of coping. In one, the person attempts to address directly the problems that he is facing; in the second, the person tries to dampen or minimize the emotional state itself, without addressing the problem that elicited the state.
